Lyft Accident Injuries in California

If you were hurt in a Lyft or by a Lyft driver, you may be dealing with medical bills, an adjuster who won’t return your calls, and a huge corporation that insists the injury isn’t their problem.

We handle Lyft injury claims for passengers, other drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, and Lyft Bike riders all over California. We know how to pull the trip data, figure out which insurance policy applies, and push back when the insurer tries to lowball a serious injury. You pay no legal fees unless we win, and if you can’t travel, we’ll come to you.

How Lyft Claims Differ

Lyft is the second-largest rideshare company in California. In the second quarter of 2026, it reported more than 26 million rides in the state, about 35% of all the rides reported by California’s rideshare companies (California PERB).

A car accident claim usually involves one driver and one insurance policy. A Lyft claim often involves more than one policy. For example, the driver’s personal auto insurance and, depending on the situation, coverage carried by Lyft itself.

How much insurance applies depends on what the Lyft driver was doing when the crash happened. If the driver had accepted a ride request, whether heading to a pickup or carrying a passenger, California requires $1 million in coverage. If the driver was only logged in and waiting for a request, the requirement is $50,000 per person for injuries, plus at least $200,000 in excess coverage per accident (California Public Utilities Code § 5433). That gap is why figuring out which situation applied, and getting Lyft to acknowledge it, is often the first fight in a Lyft case. The law sets these amounts as minimums; it does not limit a company’s liability above them.

If you were a passenger and another driver caused the crash without insurance or without enough of it, Lyft must provide its own coverage for that situation. Since January 1, 2026, it’s $60,000 per person (up to $300,000 per crash), down from $1 million.

You don’t need to work any of this out yourself. Your attorney will work to identify every applicable insurance policy. For more on how rideshare insurance works, see our Rideshare (Uber & Lyft) Accident Injuries page.

Injured on a Lyft Bike?

Lyft also runs the Bay Area’s bikeshare system, known as Bay Wheels until July 2026 and now called Lyft Bike, with bikes and stations in San Francisco, Berkeley, Emeryville, Daly City, Oakland, and San Jose (Lyft).

Bikeshare injuries often raise questions about whether the bike was defective or poorly maintained, and about the condition of the road. Lyft’s own annual report says its shared bike and scooter programs have had product issues in the past, and that such issues can lead to recalls, removal from service, injuries, and litigation (Lyft 2025 Form 10-K).

If a city street or other public property played a part in your injury, the deadline to file a claim against a public agency can be as short as six months, so it’s important to take action quickly.

Lyft Injuries That Did Not Involve a Collision

Not every Lyft injury comes from a crash. Assaults and other intentional acts by a driver can create liability that is separate from an ordinary negligence claim. If that’s what happened to you, contact us for a free consultation.

Before You Talk to an Insurer

Adjusters often reach out quickly, hoping to settle before the full extent of your injuries is known. If one hasn’t contacted you yet, don’t give a recorded statement or accept an offer until you’ve spoken with us. If you already have, it’s not too late. Call us for a free consultation to talk through your case.

The other side may also try to blame you for the crash. Even if you’re found to be partly at fault, California’s “pure comparative fault” rule still allows you to recover compensation. Your award is reduced by your share of fault, but you aren’t barred from recovering.

Injuries and Compensation for Lyft Accident Injurues

Serious injuries we often see in Lyft crashes include herniated discs and other spine injuries, traumatic brain injuries, fractures, shoulder tears, and chronic pain. Bike crashes can also cause head injuries, broken wrists and collarbones, and facial injuries. Read more here about serious injuries.

Depending on your case, we work to recover compensation for:

  • Medical expenses, past and future, including surgery and therapy
  • Lost income and lost earning capacity
  • Pain and suffering and emotional distress
  • Vehicle and other property damage
  • Wrongful death damages for families
